ArcSDE CAD Client #9

Other CAD Clients of ArcSDE

ArcSDE is a data server software from ESRI that manages spatial data in a database. In a client server architecture ArcSDE is the backend server waiting for requests from a client to perform some tasks such as retrieving, storing or updating features.

There are a number of commercial software products that do not come from ESRI that are Clients to ArcSDE. Most notable for this BLOG are those that work within CAD. This would include ESRI’s ArcSDE CAD Client, the Bentley ArcGIS Connector Extension to ProjectWise for Microstation, Bentley’s GISConnect for AutoCAD and Autodesk Maps ArcSDE capabilities

Bentley’s two solutions use ESRI’s ArcObjects tools to communicate with ArcSDE and therefore support editing of the modern ESRI geodatabase . Autodesk’s solution uses the open source C-API to read simple feature layers, more akin to the older technology found in ESRI’s ArcSDE CAD Client, both of which provides read/only access to ESRI ArcGIS geodatabases, and editing only for ArcSDE simple feature layers.

ArcGIS of course is a full geodatabase client of ArcSDE, as is the ArcGIS Data Interoperability extension. Although these are not CAD-based software (out of the box) they are still the most flexible and powerful way to move data between ArcSDE and CAD, albeit using conversion and semantic translation workflows inside of a GIS software rather than inside CAD.
